Sky Sports Living for Sport
Leadership skills through sport
On Wednesday 1st February, Andrew Bridge attended Leeds City Academy as part of the Sky Sports Living for Sport initiative. Andrew played over 300 professional Basketball matches in the English Basketball League for the Sheffield Sharks and the Newcastle Eagles. He won the Basketball Championships whilst he was the captain of the Newcastle Eagles and also achieved a Bronze medal with the England Basketball Team in the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne.
Whilst in school, Andrew delivered sessions on team building, communication and leadership skills to students in Year 9 and 10, integrating Basketball into the sessions. This was a valuable experience for many BTEC Physical Education students as these skills are essential skills required for their Leadership unit and will no doubt have a positive impact on their final grade.
The afternoon consisted of Andrew talking to the Year 10 BTEC PE students about his career and held a question and answer session, in which students had prepared relevant questions. In addition to this, current issues in sport were also discussed, such as funding for athletes and drug testing in sport.
It was a very enjoyable and educational day involved and we all look forward to next years Sky Sports Living for Sport Day.
