Summer Water Safety
Leeds City Academy would like to encourage parents and students to remind themselves of summer water safety.
Although the hot weather can seem like the perfect time to cool down by swimming in Leeds’ reservoirs, rivers and canals, we have taken advice from the West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service to alert students of the dangers of cold water.
Remember cold water can be a killer. The instant shock can lead to hyperventilation, increased blood pressure, breathing difficulties and heart attacks. Water temperatures remain just as cold in summer as in winter.
There is a good summer safety message in the ‘Float to Live’ video from the Royal National Life Saving Institute (RNLI), which delivers good advice on how to react should you become stricken in cold water. Please be aware that this video is hard-hitting.
Thank you for your support with this important matter.
