York St John University Residential
Ten of our Year 10 Students had the privilege of attending a fantastic residential at York St John University. The residential was offered out to eight schools from a similar social economic background to Leeds City Academy.
The residential aimed to inform students of the prospects of going to University and engage them in Higher education.
The quality of the programmes delivered and the positive experience the pupils had far exceeded our expectations.
As part of the residential, students carried out a three day research project in small groups for their chosen strand of education. Each pupil chose between:
· Crime and sociology
· Music and performing arts
· Health and social care
Students had the opportunity to socialise with students from other schools, work in groups and then conclude by presenting their work on the final day. They got a chance to explore York town centre as well as stay in the University accommodation, which was a very real experience and insight into the life of a student. One of our students even came away with a ‘Certificate of Excellence’ as his character and hard work stood out across the eight schools who attended.
This visit is also going to be followed up by four sessions based on motivation, revision, well-being, application writing and interview skills. These session will take place at Leeds City Academy and will be led by the York St John University Ambassadors.
