Gemma was raised within a military family living in Germany and Cyprus before being educated in Lancashire, England. She gained a BA Honours degree in Human Geography at Nottingham Trent University before moving to Leeds where she qualified in 2002 as a Geography teacher in secondary education.
Gemma began her teaching career at Bruntcliffe School and within her first year gained promotion to Head of Year 11. She has since spent 13 years leading pastoral care and guidance within all year groups gaining further promotion as Transition and SEN Strategic Manager whilst also acquiring a further PGCE in Special Educational Needs.
In 2015 and with new leadership from The Gorse Academies Trust, Gemma took on the role of Director of Pupil Premium and Head of Year 11 at Bruntcliffe Academy. She developed a clear monitoring and reward system that praised students for their positive contributions and attitudes to learning and this led to increases in the overall attendance of disadvantaged students compared to the previous year.
