Course Description: The GCSE specification in Mathematics requires students to demonstrate skill and ability across the following assessment objectives:
AO1: Use and apply standard techniques. Students should be able to accurately recall facts, terminology and definitions; use and interpret notation correctly; and accurately carry out one and multi-step procedures.
AO2: Reason, interpret and communicate mathematically. Students should be able to make deductions, inferences and draw conclusions; construct chains of reasoning; present arguments and proofs; and communicate accurately.
AO3: Solve problems within mathematics and in other contexts. Students should be able to translate problems in mathematical and non-mathematical contexts into a process or processes; make and use connection between different parts of mathematics; interpret results within context and evaluate methods and results.

Future Opportunities and Careers
A GCSE in Mathematics is an essential qualification for almost every professional job in the UK. It is also a facilitating subject, in that it equips students with essential knowledge and skills, for most if not all post 16 educational courses. For this reason, it is legally mandated that students who do not achieve a passing grade in Mathematics repeatedly resit the examinations until they either achieve a passing grade or turn 18.
Careers that make particular use of mathematics are varied and include, but are not limited to, careers in: construction, carpentry, retail and commerce, finance, engineering, accountancy, architecture civil engineering.
Further Information
The assessment for the specification of GCSE Mathematics is divided in to two tiers; the Foundation Tier and the Higher Tier. The Foundation Tier awards grades from 1-5 whilst the Higher Tier awards grades from 4-9.
