Year 10 Computer Science Students Explore the Future of Tech Law at the University of Law

Future of Technology

Leeds City Academy’s Year 10 Computer Science students recently had the exciting opportunity to visit the University of Law, where they explored the fascinating intersection of Technology and Law. The visit focused on how technology is shaping the future of legal practice, specifically through Tech Law.

During the visit, students engaged in a series of hands-on activities. They analysed a contract, verified the accuracy of data records, and suggested improvements to enhance efficiency and accuracy. One of the highlights of the day was participating in a courtroom debate, where students teamed up with students from other schools to argue a copyright case. Leeds City Academy students excelled in both prosecution and defence roles, demonstrating exceptional teamwork and legal insight. Although the judges’ verdict was guilty, the students' performance was impressive throughout.

In addition to the practical activities, students had the chance to tour the University of Law’s state-of-the-art facilities, learning about the range of courses available and gaining valuable insights into potential career paths in Tech Law. The students were treated to a keynote address from four industry experts: Lateefah Khan, Joseph Capar, Lydia Smith, and Sajjad Haider. The speakers provided a deep dive into the role of technology within the legal industry, followed by a Q&A session where Leeds City Academy students asked thought-provoking questions, particularly around the issue of AI bias in legal applications.

The day concluded with a presentation by Chloe Thompson from Whitecap Consulting, who discussed the growing field of LegalTech in Leeds and beyond. The students were inspired by the potential of tech innovations in the legal sector and gained a better understanding of how they can get involved in this dynamic field.

As a recognition of their participation, all students received an iBelong certificate, and Ashley, Mohammed, Zarina, and Ben were awarded vouchers for their excellent contributions throughout the day.

This experience not only provided students with valuable insights into the world of Tech Law but also sparked curiosity about the future of technology and its role in shaping legal practices. Well done to all students involved!
